U.S. pole vaulter Sam Kendricks, a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve, was sprinting down the runway on his way to a vault when he suddenly stopped, dropped his pole and stood at attention for “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Kendricks’ patriotic act has drawn praise from many.
Kendricks, 23, finished first in the preliminaries and won a bronze medal with a 5.85-meter jump.
