Robot Goes Berserk At Tech Show Injuring A Man | Today In Robot Apocalypse

For Today In Robot Apocalypse we go to Shenzhen, China where attendees of the 18th annual China Hit-Tech Fair were stunned to get a glimpse of their impending robot dominated future. A small droid named “Little Fat One” appears to have malfunctioned, going berserk. This resulted in the injury of one human being who was caught in the maniac machine meltdown.

The automaton, made by the Beijing based company, Evolver is supposed to be an educational helper for children ages 4-12 with what they call advanced artificial intelligence programming. It retails for $1,450. However after being left alone for a few minutes the little trash can shaped robot began to violently smash the company’s display booth. Not exactly The Terminator, but many keychains, tote bags and corporate branded pens were destroyed. Duh-dun-dun-dun-dun.

What is most disturbing about this is that it appears the robot has broken the laws. Every good science fiction fan knows Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws Of Robotics:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Robots are not even in every home yet and already they are acting out against us. I’m guessing he did not like constantly being called “Little Fat One” by children telling him what to do. Normally the educational robot is supposed to display emotions to help in interact with children. Most disturbingly while the robot’s face is a happy smile, just after the incident the bot could be seen with this distressed, derp face.

To me that is the face not of a friend of humanity here to help usher us into a technological singularity utopia, but the face of a killer after he just gunned down a building full people. In a sick twist he can’t even kill himself to be free of the anguish of what he has done because he is an immortal robot.

Do you think robots will eventually help or enslave humanity?
