Sad news this morning: Mob Wives star Angela Raiola—better known as “Big Ang”—has died after a battle with cancer. She was 55.
“It is with sad regret that we inform you that at 3:01 A.M. Angela Raiola peacefully ended her battle with cancer and was called home,” friend Vinnie Medugno wrote on Ang’s Twitter page early this morning. “She was surrounded by nothing but love from her immediate family and closest friends.”
Medugno added: “You (her fans) were some of the most special people in her world, and she loved you immensely. Thank you for your love, prayers, and unconditional support of Angela right to the very end.”
Confirmation of Big Ang’s death comes just hours after her passing was inaccurately reportedly earlier Wednesday evening. At that time, a statement appeared on her Twitter reading: “Angela is still in the hospital surrounded by her loved ones, and is fighting.” Big Ang had been battling cancer for nearly a year, after being first diagnosed with throat cancer back in March 2015. She had a lemon-sized tumor removed at the time, but this February, it was revealed that she had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung and brain cancer. Chemotherapy proved ineffective, and a GoFundMe page had been started to help raise money for alternative treatments. “It’s shocking what happened. First I thought I was cancer-free and I was gonna have a big celebration, have a party, and then a month later I [had] stage IV [cancer],” Big Ang told Dr. Oz in an interview that aired just this past Tuesday.
Raiola is survived by her estranged husband, Neil Murphy, her sister Janine Detore, two children, Raquel and Anthony Donfrio, and six grandchildren.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ang’s family at this difficult time.
