Many fans were disappointed that LucasFilm won’t have any panels at San Diego Comic-Con this week, but it isn’t terribly surprising since the studio just held the annual Star Wars Celebration last weekend in London. Still, even though there won’t be any panels for upcoming Star Wars movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 16, 2016) and Star Wars: Episode VIII, this beloved galaxy far, far away still has a presence at the Con. Today we have new details and photos that shed light on three new characters in Rogue One, Pao, Bistan and Ediro Two Tubes.
Fans got their first look at Pao and Bistan in the sizzle reel that debuted at Star Wars Celebration last week. Since these characters weren’t officially revealed in this reel, Pao earned the nickname “Bigmouth” while Bistan earned the nickname “Space Monkey,” who also had a memorable onstage appearance at Celebration. Entertainment Weekly spoke with Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, who had this to say about the unique process of choosing the creatures for this movie.
“It wasn’t like, ‘We’ve got this character, we need to design a creature for it, and here’s what this creature’s like. It was more like we told the creature department to come up with a thousand ideas, and then it was like casting the movie. There were walls and walls of these different types of characters that we could’ve picked from. We just went through them, like, ‘God, he’s fascinating. Who’s that? And she looks amazing! And what’s that there?’ Slowly, we got it down to our top hundred, and then it got even more refined.”
The director reveals that Pao is a soldier who serves as a makeshift platoon leader, “coordinating the charge into battle.” The director says that the design with his wide mouth helped inform what character he ended up becoming. Here’s what he had to say below.
“There was this great design of this creature that’s mouth would open really wide, and he looked like he was really good at giving orders and shouting at people during a battle. I was like, ‘We’ve got to give him that moment in the film,’ and so [Pao] was born out of that.”
Bistan is seen in the sizzle reel manning a machine gun while showing off his maniacal laugh. Gareth Edwards revealed that Bistan is a gunner on a brand new type of ship known as the https://movieweb.com/rogue-one-star-wars-story-tropical-planet-new-ships/U-Wing, which is said to be a cross between a gunship and a “troop transport” ship. LucasFilm story group member Pablo Hidalogo also revealed on this week’s The Star Wars Show that Bistan is part of a new species known as Iakaru. Gareth Edwards also revealed that Bistan has quite a memorable role, although he won’t say too much quite yet.
“It’s not necessarily a character that we get to know, but I think he has a very memorable, iconic look. [He’s] one of my favorites. I can’t give away what happens to him.”
For fans who have been walking the convention floor over the past few days, you may have stumbled across another new character, known as Ediro Two Tubes. This character can be seen at the LucasFilm Pavilion (#2913)) on the convention floor, and just like Pao and Bistan, he has quite the unique look. Here’s what the official description of this character from Star Wars Facebook, which came with photos from the convention floor.
“Edrio Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his eggmate, Benthic. The two share the nickname derived from the breathing apparatus that allows their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres. Edrio’s home world Yar Togna was conquered and occupied by the Empire, forcing him to flee as a refugee. Desiring to strike back at the Empire, Edrio and Benthic have allied with Saw Gerrera.”
