'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Won't Tie Into 'Avengers: Infinity War'?

Last night, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn held an impromptu Q&A session on his Facebook page, where he answered questions for nearly an hour through a live video feed. We know production will begin soon in Atlanta, with Marvel already setting a May 5, 2017 release date. There is very little we know about the story thus far, but one of the most interesting tidbits he shared is that there will be no Infinity Stones featured in the sequel.

“We’re not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2. Is that a spoiler? It’s not really a thing.”

As of now, four of the six Infinity Stones have been revealed, but it isn’t known when the last two will come into play. The Space Stone was the Tesseract, which is currently housed in Asgard, with the Mind Stone currently serving as a power source for Vision. The Reality Stone was originally contained in the Aether from Thor: The Dark World, and is now housed in The Collector‘s (Benicio Del Toro) museum, and the Power Stone was first seen in the orb from Guardians of the Galaxy, which is now housed at Nova Corps. The last two stones, the Soul Stone and the Time Stone will surely come into play at some point in Phase Three, but it seems we won’t be getting the Soul Stone or Time Stone in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. There was a report in December that Doctor Strange may have the Time Stone, which could be the Eye of Agamotto, but that hasn’t been confirmed quite yet. The director also reiterated that Thanos will not be seen in the sequel.

Thanos will not appear in Vol. 2. No. As I’ve said before, Thanos isn’t in this movie. I think he’s gonna have a little bit to do and say when it comes to a certain wars and infinity. We’ve got other fish to fry in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

We first saw Thanos at the very end of Marvel’s The Avengers, where it was revealed that he was the mastermind behind Loki’s attack on Earth. He next appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy, and then during the end credits sequence of Avengers: Age of Ultron, where he was seen wielding the mighty Infinity Gauntlet. It isn’t known when Thanos will be seen next in the MCU, but we’ll keep you posted with more updates. Until then, you can visit the director’s Facebook page to watch the entire Q&A video.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes to theaters May 5th, 2017.
