Friday the 13th Remake Gets Last Witch Hunter Director

Back in December, Paramount’s long-awaited Friday the 13th reboot last director David Bruckner, who had been attached for nearly a year and a half, while gaining screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners). Since then, we’ve heard a number of reports about this story, including producer Brad Fuller confirming that fans will meet Jason Voorhees’ entire family, including his mother Pamela and his father Elias, the latter of which has never been seen on screen. Today we have word that the studio has finally found a new director, with The Crazies filmmaker Breck Eisner entering talks to direct.

Bloody-Disgusting broke the news that Breck Eisner is in talks to direct, while also revealing that Aaron Guzikowski turned in his script last month. The site also reports that Elias Voorhees is featured in the script “quite a bit,” but no specific details were given. Here’s what producer Brad Fuller had to say about this project back in June.

“We’re going to go back and we’re going to meet that family. We’re going to meet the family. You’re gonna meet Pamela, Elias, and Jason. And you’re gonna see how it all happened. You kind of have to understand Jason Voorhees, so we go back and we kind of started over and work our way forward. But it’s an origin that no one has seen before. Obviously Pamela’s there, but it’s a little bit different from what you’ve seen before.”

Back in October, Paramount pushed their Friday the 13th reboot from May 13, 2016 to January 13, 2017, marking the third time its release date had been pushed. It had been originally set for release on March 13, 2015, way back in 2013. The reboot was later pushed to November 13, 2015, and then to May 13, 2016, before landing on its new January 13, 2017 release date. We we don’t have any official confirmation from Paramount, the site speculates that the release date may be shifted again to October 13, 2017.

No cast members have been announced quite yet, and we don’t know when principal photography will begin. Breck Eisner is the son of Michael Eisner, who was actually the president and CEO of Paramount Pictures when the Friday the 13th franchise was launched in 1980. The filmmaker is best known for directing the The Crazies, another beloved horror remake, along with Sahara and last year’s The Last Witch Hunter, starring Vin Diesel. Stay tuned for more on the Friday the 13th reboot as this project gets back on track.
