First Dark Tower Footage Will Arrive This October

Last month, filming wrapped on The Dark Tower, which means many fans have already started to wonder when the first footage may be showcased. With Sony Pictures set to release this adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel on February 17, 2017, the window to preview any footage is somewhat small, but today we have word on when that first look will happen. For fans in Los Angeles, you can check out footage at Entertainment Weekly’s PopFest celebration.

The EW Popfest front page features a number of highlights from the two-day event, which will take place on October 29 and October 30 at The Reef in downtown Los Angeles. Among the programming highlights on the home page, it’s revealed that the first footage from The Dark Tower will be shown. We don’t know if it will be a full trailer, or perhaps just a clip, or how much of The Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and The Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey) will be shown.

We also don’t know if Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey or even author Steven King will be on hand at EW Popfest to introduce this footage. While it seems likely that the footage will be released officially online shortly thereafter, we don’t know for sure what the studio’s plans are for this highly-anticipated first look. It was recently confirmed that this long-awaited project is much more than just a simple adaptation of Steven King’s novel series, but it’s also a continuation of the story.

Stephen King revealed in June that the story will start exactly where the book starts, with his now-iconic line “The Man in Black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed.” The author also added that the story will then shift to the middle of the story. The author also teased on Twitter last month that, “The Dark Tower is close, now. The Crimson King awaits. Soon Roland will raise the Horn of Eld. And blow,” which lead to the speculation that the movie will be a sequel, which has since been confirmed, with this movie said to provide a new “cinematic origin story,” and Stephen King has also teased there will be big changes from the books in this movie.

There has been talk that this first movie could begin with the actual end of The Dark Tower novels, which would explain these changes to the story and characters that have been cast, who weren’t introduced until much later in the books. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey lead a cast that also includes Abbey Lee as Tirana, Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, Michael Barbieri as Timmy and Katheryn Winnick in an unspecified role. Nikolaj Arcel is directing from a script by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing. Stay tuned for more on The Dark Tower as we get closer to the February 17, 2017 release date.
