Doctor Strange Nears $500 Million at Worldwide Box Office

Earlier today, we reported that Marvel’s Doctor Strange solidified its status as a box office hit by winning its second weekend in a row with $43 million. That tally has put this Marvel Phase 3 adventure past the $150 million mark domestically, bringing its total to $153 million. The movie is also closing in on another box office milestone, $500 million worldwide.

Deadline reports that Doctor Strange‘s foreign total of $339.6 million has pushed its worldwide box office total to $492.6 million worldwide. It will most likely pass the $500 million mark when the final weekend numbers come in tomorrow, or possibly on Tuesday. At this point in its release, Doctor Strange has grossed 37% more internationally than Ant-Man and 34% more than Guardians of the Galaxy.

From Marvel Studios comes Doctor Strange, the story of world-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange whose life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place-a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality.

Before long, Strange, armed with newly acquired magical powers, is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. The supporting cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Benedict Wong as Wong, Michael Stuhlbarg as Nicodemus West, Mads Mikkelsen as Kaecilius and Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One. Scott Derrickson is directing with Kevin Feige producing. Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth and Stan Lee serve as executive producers. Jon Spaihts and Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill wrote the screenplay.

Doctor Strange is the second movie in Marvel’s Phase Three line-up, which has been rumored to introduce a new Infinity Stone, the Eye of Agamotto, believed to be the Time Gem. If this is true, there is just one more Infinity Stone left to be revealed, the Soul Stone, which will most likely be introduced at some point before Avengers: Infinity War. Production will begin on Avengers: Infinity War in this coming January in Atlanta.
