Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh Will Score the Thor: Ragnarok Soundtrack

I think we can all agree, that while we may love Chris Hemsworth as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his solo adventures have left a little something to be desired. That being said, Thor: Ragnarok is shaping up to be something very interesting, and potentially special. Things just got even more interesting, as Marvel Studios has tapped Devo co-founder Mark Mothersbaugh to compose the original score for Thor’s third solo outing.

Entertainment Weekly confirmed the news that Mothersbaugh will be joining the project, which was originally reported by The Wrap. The studio has yet to make the announcement official. Many may feel that he is a peculiar choice to put together the music for Thor: Ragnarok, but Mothersbaugh has actually had a very impressive career outside of writing 80s hits like “Whip It” and “Uncontrollable Urge.” He has nearly 200 composing credits to his name, dating back to the late 1980s. Just a few of his notable credits include both 21 and 22 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie, several Wes Anderson movies and interestingly, every single episode of Rugrats, as well as all of the movies.

It is pretty clear that Marvel Studios is going all-out on Thor: Ragnarok. While the first two movies did well enough at the box office, neither Thor or Thor:The Dark World are generally considered to be among the best works in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kevin Feige is really pulling out all of the stops for this third installment, and seems to be taking a very different approach. The addition of What We Do in the Shadows director Taika Waititi was a big sign that we should expect something very unique from Ragnarok. The addition of Mothersbaugh and his very distinctive style is another big indicator. Not only that but Chris Hemsworth is going to be joined by Mark Ruffalo, who will be reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for the movie, which is undoubtedly very exciting for fans.

The cast joining Hemsworth and Ruffalo in this new Thor adventure, which will finally be adapting the fan favorite Planet Hulk storyline, is absolutely stacked with new talent, along with a couple of welcome, familiar faces. Tom Hiddleston will be returning for one last go as Loki, and Anthony Hopkins will be back as Odin. The exciting new additions included Cate Blanchett, who will be playing the primary villain as Hela, Jeff Goldblum who is playing the role of Grandmaster, Karl Urban playing the villainous Skurge, and Creed star Tessa Thompson, who is playing Valkyrie. It was also recently confirmed that the Warriors Three will be returning, but Natalie Portman, who played Jane Foster in the first two Thor movies, will not be back.

Mark Mothersbaugh will be joining the likes of Michael Giacchino, Brian Tyler and Alan Silvestri who have all scored other movies in the MCU. Granted, his sensibilities are very different and we may very likely be hearing a lot more synthesizers, which could be pretty cool. It will definitely match the aesthetic of the logo for the movie, should that be the case. Thor 3 is set for release on November 3, 2017.
