Celine Dion took the stage in Las Vegas on Wednesday to pay tribute to her late husband, Rene Angelil. The singer didn’t perform at the memorial event, but she thanked everyone for their support during such a difficult time.
She told the crowd: “This is my home away from home. At the same time I’m supposed to feel extremely comfortable being home and right now I’m not sure how comfortable I feel.
“I feel his love in this room. I feel his strength and his warmth being reflected in all of you. Rene always surrounded me with the best people who believed in us and always worked so hard on our behalf.”
At the end of her speech, Dion became very emotional and let the tears flow down her face. “On behalf of my family, thank you again for being here with us this evening for this beautiful tribute to mon amour. Rene I love you, so much, merci, good night,” she said.
Angelil’s children from his previous marriages, his brother, and several industry friends and associates also attended the memorial event, which streamed live online.
Angelil died of throat cancer last month. He was laid to rest on Jan. 22 at Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica – the church where she and Angelil were married in 1994. The funeral was broadcast nationally, and the singer mourned her husband’s passing alongside millions of fans.
