Just yesterday, we shared an interesting new interview with Alien: Covenant star Danny McBride. And while he dropped quite a few tidbits about the movie and the pilot character he plays, perhaps the most appealing aspect to fans is that director Ridley Scott is going the practical effects route for this follow-up to 2012’s Prometheus. We’ve heard that the original Xenomorph Alien will be making an appearance along with other creatures both old and new. Now, in a new set video, we get to see one of the new xenomorphs coming to life.
The video is titled ‘Where it all begins’. And apparently it begins with the Xenomorph‘s iconic hands, which are getting an upgrade in Covenant. The video shows the long, skinny black fingers receiving their veining Gieger-esque sheen. And if you look close enough, you will also see the unnamed Xenomorph actor in the background getting some make-up applied. Here’s what Danny McBride had to say about bringing the Aliens to life, hinting that he’ll definitely be chased by one at some point in the movie.
“I didn’t know if it would be all green screen, but most of the stuff is practical effects: when you’re running from an alien it’s really a dude in an alien suit coming after you! The sets are incredible and you’re in them: We go through some inclement weather at one point on the spaceship and this whole gigantic set is on a gimbal, shaking up and down. You don’t have to use your imagination.”
Way back in May, we actually got to see some of the new Xenomorph-like creatures on the Australian set. These leaked paparazzi photos showed two new Xenomorphs fighting in the desert. We also got to see a massive massacre of what looked to be Engineers. This extraterrestrial slaughterhouse also included the giant Engineer heads that we’d seen in a previous production update. The leaked photos were from a quarry in Sydney where director Ridley Scott and his crew are shooting.
That scene appeared to be the aftermath of some very violent moment in this true prequel to the original 1979 Alien. It was accompanied by a mix of scorched, possibly petrified, blackened humanoid type creatures. And there were also new Aliens, which should get fans quite excited. Especially since these appear to be actors in suits, not CGI creatures, as Danny McBride implies. Though we’re sure they will get enhanced in post. This scene in question hints that a hard R rating will be firmly in place, as Scott has promised.
Shooting is taking place throughout the summer in an undisclosed location in Sydney, Australia. The first photos were taken in the New South Wales capital. But the official behind-the-scenes photos have all been delivered directly from an in-studio set where the Covenant spacecraft is housed. Alien: Covenant starts a new prequel trilogy that will bridge the gap in the events between Prometheus and the original Alien. Michael Fassbender will be the only original Prometheus star returning in a lead role, reprising his character as the android David. Back in December, it was confirmed that iconic Alien creatures such as the Facehugger, Chestburster and Xenomorph will be appearing in the sequel.
The story follows the crew of the colony ship Covenant, who are bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. They discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world, whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
