Ridley Scott recently wrapped production on Alien: Covenant, which will be the first proper Aliens movie we have had in a very long time. Yes, Prometheus was a prequel to Alien, but it was buried pretty deep back in the lore and was only loosely connected to the franchise. Outside of Scott’s new movie, fans are eagerly awaiting any firm updates on the status of Neill Blomkamp’s highly anticipated Alien 5. Fox hasn’t given any official word on it, but star Michael Biehn seems very confident that the movie is still going to happen.
Biehn of course played the part of Hicks in James Cameron’s Aliens, which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary. Biehn appeared at the panel for the movie that took place during at San Diego Comic-Con, but the subject of Alien 5 didn’t get addressed, at least by him. However, the actor recently spoke quite a bit about the project with Forbes and revealed that he seems quite confident it will happen at some point. Here is what he had to say.
“I think it would be very embarrassing to Fox if they don’t give Sigourney the movie that she really wants to go out on. I don’t know when it’s going to happen but I know it’s going to happen and I know I’m going to be in it and there’s going to be a new Newt, she’s going to be about 26 or 27 and looks a lot like Jennifer Lawrence to me but I don’t know.”
Back when Blomkamp was promoting Chappie, he randomly tweeted out some amazing concept art for a sequel to Aliens that went viral in a big way. This got the attention of Fox, and that ultimately led to the movie getting the go-ahead. Blomkamp had a draft of the script completed and everything seemed in place, but then things fell apart. Biehn spoke about that a bit as well.
“I thought [the film] was dead and gone as [Weaver] probably did too as well as Fox. [Blomkamp] tweeted out some pictures of me, he said he’s going take the third and fourth film and act like they never happened and things blew up. It looked like it was all go and then Ridley Scott decided that he was going to do a second and third film in the Prometheus series, but Sigourney says they are still doing their project.”
Sigourney Weaver has been championing the project ever since it seemed to die at the hands of Ridley Scott, who is seemingly comfortable finishing his career making prequels to Alien. The problem for Blomkamp is that, even though his pitch was very exciting to Fox and fans, Chappie totally bombed. At the same time, Scott had a massive hit with The Martian. So, when he decided to finally pull the trigger on Alien: Covenant, it was hard for Fox not to go with the hot hand. Not only that, but Alien is his franchise, so in a way, what Scott wants goes.
For right now, it looks like Fox is just going to stick with the Alien prequels Scott has planned, which kind of makes sense. On the other hand, the Aliens cast isn’t getting any younger, and if they want Blomkamp to actually do his movie, they need to work something about relatively soon. We will have to wait and see what happens. Alien: Covenant is set for release on August 4, 2017.
