Today the nation is yet again faced with the specter of more terrorist attacks on US soil. Let’s be thankful for the heroes, who in the face of danger helped stopped attacks as they happened.
1. Off Duty Police Officer Shot Minnesota Mall Stabber Terrorist
This past weekend as a homemade bomb went off in a dumpster in Manhattan, shoppers at the Crossroads Center mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota were attacked by a knife wielding man. ISIS later claimed responsibility for the incident in which a man dressed in a private security outfit took a knife and stabbed 9 innocent civilians. Luckily more injuries or even fatalities were not sustained as an off duty police officer from nearby Albany, Minnesota happened to be shopping at the mall during the attack. Jason Falconer, a former police chief confronted the terrorist who lunged toward him before Falconer shot him. The terrorist tried to get up three more times before Falconer shot him dead. The Mayor of St. Cloud, applauded Falconer’s heroic actions that saved lives saying, “Clearly he is a hero. Officer Falconer was there at the right time and the right place.”
St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson went on to say,
“None of us ever want to have to do that, but that’s what we’re here for, and Officer Falconer’s actions were swift and direct, and in my opinion appropriate.”
The nine stabbing victims are said to have non-life threatening injuries and will recover.
2. Man Sacrifices Himself, Saves Lives By Hugging A Suicide Bomber
An ISIS militant wearing a suicide belt filled with explosives was making his way to a shrine in the Iraqi city of Balad. Najih Shaker Al-Baldawi was with a group of people walking toward the shrine when he noticed the suicide bomber about to detonate his bomb belt. Taking swift and selfless action, Al-Baldawi stopped the terrorist, hugging him and preventing him from entering the Sayyed Mohammad Shrine. While other suicide bombers were able to kill 40 people in the attack, Al-Baldawi is credited with saving countless more lives.
3. Three Americans Stop Terrorist Shooter On French Train
In August of 2015 a group of three American friends were traveling on a high speed train from Amsterdam to Paris, France. As the train passed through Belgium a gunman came out of the bathroom brandishing a Kalashnikov and began shooting randomly at passengers. Luckily two of the friends happened to be members of the US Army and Airforce and knew to take quick action when they heard the gunfire.
U.S. Army Specialist Alek Skarlatos, 22, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Spencer Stone, 23, and Anthony Sadler, 23, a Sacramento college student, tackled the gunman later identified as Ayoub El-Khazzani, and tied him up before he could injure or kill any more passengers. The French government awarded the trio the Legion of Honor for their actions. US Airman Stone who was stabbed in the fight with the attacker received a Purple Heart and Airman’s Medal, while Skarlatos received the Soldier’s medal and Sadler received a civilian ward. Stone has been humble with the attention he received for his heroic deeds saying,
“I believe any other airman in the Air Force would have done the same thing.”
4. Motorcyclist Jumps Onto Nice Terror Truck To Help Stop It
During the horrific Nice, France terrorist attack in which 84 people were run over and killed by a large truck, during the Bastille Day celebrations, a motorcyclist and a moped rider jumped into action. As the crowds of people ran in the opposite direction, a moped rider later identified only as “Franck” sped toward the ISIS killer manning the truck, Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel. Like something out of an action movie, at the same time a motorcyclist named Alexander Migues leapt from his bike onto the side of the truck and began punching the terrorist in the face, even as policemen began firing bullets into the cab. When the terrorist pulled a gun, Migues jumped off, but this slowed the truck down and gave Franck time to get his moped in position to throw under its tires bringing the vehicle to a complete stop. This allowed police the opportunity to kill the driver and prevent even further deaths.
5. A Real Guitar Hero Stops Tel Aviv Terrorist Attack With His Gibson
A young man thought he would chill by the waterfront in Tel Aviv, Israel last March playing his acoustic guitar. However as Yishay Montgomery sat peacefully playing music into the night, a knife wielding terrorist began attacking him and those around him. Montgomery sprang into action, fighting back with what was available to him; his acoustic Gibson guitar. He ran at the man yelling “Terrorist! Terrorist!” and hit him over the head with the musical instrument. Others joined in the fight and subdued the attacker who was then shot by police. Sadly, before the guitar wielding hero was able to step in 10 people were stabbed and an American named Taylor Force later died from his wounds.
